During the April 2017 Reunion, USMLM members elected Dr Stephen V. Hoyt as their new association president. Dr. Hoyt served at USMLM from 1976 until 1978, at which time he began graduate school. He obtained an M.A. in German and a Ph.D. in Literary Theory from the State University of New York, Stony Brook. He also specialized in East European Area Studies, with a concentration on East Germany. In 1980 he was recommended for a direct commission as Captain in Military Intelligence (the whole story is too complicated and not particularly exciting). He returned to USMLM as a civilian analyst in 1983 and served until 1986, when he left for the Special Research Detachment (SRD), which was located at NSA. During his civilian tour he wrote what was probably the only dissertation ever produced on the USMLM Wang computer….after ‘normal’ duty hours. He can assure the Chief of Mission, Roland Lajoie, that he never wrote ‘mushy’ poetry on any government computer. (He was once asked this question by the Chief, as he sat toiling late at night.)
He rejoined the USMLM follow-on unit, CAD-B, spent some time doing war game scenarios at Ft. Bliss and left government service.
Since leaving government service, he has spent time as a curriculum director, teacher, university professor, language software designer, and journalist. For 14 summers he worked with a Washington NGO in the former Soviet Union, where he trained scientists and graduate students in science to improve their academic English skills. From 2011 until 2013 he taught at the New Economic School (NES) in their inaugural bachelor’s program. In 2013, the FSB sent a B-Team to question him on the street, coincidentally after he discussed Thoreau’s ‘Civil Disobedience’ in several classes. He had also written an article about Putin being booed at a large mixed martial arts (MMA) event and had (foolishly) been cited in several articles. One week after the FSB visit, the rector of the university left the country for Paris and has not returned. He also spent time training teachers and university professors at Duhok University in Iraqi Kurdistan.
He speaks fluent German and is proficient in French, Spanish, and Russian. Currently, he is the Head of School of Obridge Academy, a fully accredited online school. He lives in Jamestown, North Carolina.
